the inevitable ups and downs of incoming data, it appears the economy is growing at such a pace that absent policy action, progress, and reducing unemployment will likely be so for some time. in the meantime inflation is subdued, running at or below our long-run objective of 2%, while longer run inflation expectations remain well anchored. the federal funds rate were 3%, we would have in my view an open and shut case for lowering it. the complication, of course, is that the funds is at its lower bound which means we can't turn that dial further. we have to use unconventional tools such as land guidance about the future path of the funds rate. with respect to lsaps, my belief, this echos the views that chairman bernanke expressed at jackson hole, is that prior rounds of lsaps have placed a significant role in supporting activity and in preventing a worrisome undershoot of our inflation objective. the case is especially strong with respect to the first round of lsaps which was a very potent piece of policy action that helped to bring the economy back from the brink in 2009. however, we now fa

there is we have what we think is a diverse economy. we have a knowledge center in our education areas much like states like california and we were pretty good at job creation at the time he got sworn into office. and he immediately dropped us from 47th out of 50. and in the end that really doesn't surprise you. because when you look at the business experience he taughts. it had nothing to do with creating jobs it had to do with helping investors. i can tell you in my region of the state, which is the south coast area south of boston. our major initiatives he was awol in terms of working with legislatures, so job creation did not occur when he was governor. and when someone else succeeded him, we have come back to that we're ahead of the terms of the rest of the country right now in job creation. there is more to go nationwide and even in our state. but in massachusetts i know we don't want to go back and one of the things that is proof in the pudding is mitt romney never campaigns for president in massachusetts. the economy post-debate? we saw some shifting -- not a lot, but some shifting in mitt romney's favor. he's ahead on the economy in florida, ahead on the economy in virginia, but behind in ohio. it sort of tells me, that sort of explains the leads. maybe it's better, as good as any number that you have out there. >> sure. this is such an important question in terms of not only the right direction, which has gotten a little tighter in terms of people thinking things are heading a little better than they were, but in terms of the economy, romney in the driver's seat in those two states but not necessarily in ohio. and the favorable or unfavorable, very important here. romney lifted his favorabilities in all three states as a result of the debate. but in ohio, he's still upside down. obama still over 50 in all three states. so he didn't get hurt. romney got helped. the race got closer. >> we also had a conservative ideological advantage of conservative in the exit polls. what do you tell folks that look at those numbers? >> this tells you you can't weight your data by party idea. we've said

news. we all hope the economy starts coming back around, that people get back to work. if you look at second quarter growth numbers this last year, those have been adjusted downward to 1.3%. you still have fuel prices of more than doubled since the president took office, health insurance costs are up 29%, college tuition up 25%. as i said earlier, incomes are down. and so we've got serious economic problems in this country that need to be addressed that aren't being addressed. we need to change the direction of the country. that's what a romney-ryan ticket will do is a different approach, it's not based upon the expansion of government in washington, d.c it's expanding the private economy where good paying jobs are really created, getting americans back to work, getting the economy growing again. and making it a more prosperous future for our children and grandchildren. i think you'll see great contrast and americans will have a very clear choice about two different visions for the future of this country. i believe that will come out very clearly in the debate this evening. >> shep

is in the mid 1980s there was the farm economy which basically collapsed in the midwest. what you had was a much worse economic environment in those states and the rest of the country, you had a republican in the white house, two terms of reagan. the voters seemed to take it out on the incumbent party in a way that didn't happen anywhere else. i'm looking at, for instance, a state like ohio where obama has been consistent. the economy is better in ohio than it is around the country. you have the auto bailout that obama put in place has clearly helped that state. could it be that he has a leg up in a state like ohio and a few others like iowa that he doesn't have anywhere else in the country and there are two separate elections? i'm seriously wondering. >> there's a point to what you're making partly because if we go against steve on the numbers we're going to lose. >> who would do that. never. >> there is definitely noise in the national number because there are states in the south and appalacia where obama's numbers are depressed and other states where it's closer. all of that factored into the
